      PREREQ: GR 201 OR EQUIVALENT GR299: ROCK ME AMADEUS: GERMAN-LANGUAGE MUSIC SCENES. FROM WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART’S MAGIC FLUTE TO RECENT POPULAR MUSIC, GERMAN-LANGUAGE COMPOSERS AND SONGWRITERS HAVE MADE A MARK ON THE MUSIC HISTORY OF THEIR LANGUAGE AREA AND, AT TIMES, THE WESTERN WORLD. STARTING WITH MOZART, THIS COURSE TAKES A TOUR OF A FEW KEY MUSICAL PERIODS AND SOME OF THE GERMAN-LANGUAGE LYRICS IT PRODUCED: 18TH-CENTURY GERMAN MUSICAL COMEDY (SINGSPIELE), 19TH-CENTURY GERMAN ART SONGS (LIEDER), WORKS BY 20TH-CENTURY SINGER-SONGWRITERS (LIEDERMACHER), THE GERMAN NEW WAVE (NEUE DEUTSCHE WELLE), GERMAN HARD ROCK (NEUE DEUTSCHE HÄRTE), GERMAN ROCK (DEUTSCHROCK), ETC. PARTICIPANTS ARE WELCOME TO REQUEST OTHER SONGS OR MUSIC SCENES. FOCUS WILL BE ON EXPLORING THE CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THESE WORKS WERE PRODUCED, TEXT ANALYSIS, THE LEGACY OF GERMAN-LANGUAGE MUSIC, AND ON LISTENING TO A LOT OF MUSIC. THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT IN GERMAN; PREREQUISITE IS GR201 OR DEMONSTRABLE PROFICIENCY AT THE INTERMEDIATE-LOW LEVEL.
